How to become a pharmacy technician in Texas
Texas wants its pharmacy technicians nationally certified. That's good news: pass the PTCE and you can register with the Texas State Board of Pharmacy and work anywhere in the state. Here's the whole path, step by step.
The 4 steps in Texas
- Meet the basics. You need a high school diploma or GED, or be working toward one. You'll also complete a fingerprint background check.
- Register as a technician trainee (optional first step). Many people start as a trainee with the Texas State Board of Pharmacy so they can work while they study. Trainee registration lasts up to 2 years and can't be renewed, so the clock is real.
- Pass the PTCE. Texas only recognizes national certification from PTCB (the PTCE) or NHA (the ExCPT). Foothills is PTCB-recognized, so finishing it makes you eligible for the PTCE.
- Register (or upgrade) as a pharmacy technician. With your certification, register with the Board, or upgrade your trainee registration. Processing takes at least 8 weeks, and you renew every 2 years with continuing education.
Rules and fees change - always confirm current details with the Texas State Board of Pharmacy.
