How to become a pharmacy technician in Hawaii
Since January 1, 2026, Hawaii requires techs to register. The bill text we reviewed sets no training or exam requirement for basic registration. Foothills prepares you well, and you still mail in a paper application.
The 5 steps in Hawaii
- Take the Foothills course. Online, self-paced, about 4 months.
- Pass the PTCE. Not required for basic registration. It is required if you want to give vaccines.
- Register by mail or in person. Send form PHT-01 and the fee to DCCA. Check with the Board for the current fee.
- Re-register every odd year. Registration runs through December 31 of each odd-numbered year.
- Vaccines only. Giving vaccines needs a CPhT, a separate hands-on ACPE immunization program, CPR, and a separate application. Foothills does not cover the hands-on part.
Costs beyond Foothills in Hawaii
- State registration fee (check with the Board)
Checked against the Hawaii Board of Pharmacy (DCCA Professional & Vocational Licensing)'s own rules in October 2026. Rules and fees change, so always confirm current details with the Hawaii Board of Pharmacy (DCCA Professional & Vocational Licensing). Sources: 1, 2, 3.
